Harriett Lorraine Smith Funkhouser, 82, of Hillsville, passed away on Sunday, October 24, 2010 at Trinity Mission Health and Rehab. Mrs. Funkhouser was born in Williamsburg, Virginia to the late Joseph Swanson Smith & Jessie Mae Little Smith. In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by her husband, Charles Alexander Funkhouser.
Survivors include a sister-in-law, Ellen Funkhouser and three nephews. Special friends include Margaret Martin, Patsy Horton, Tonya Puckett and a host of friends from Hillsville High School.
Mrs. Funkhouser graduated from Hillsville High School in 1946 and from William and Mary College in 1950 with a major in Sociology. Harriett first taught at the old Gordonsville School in Orange County, Virginia where she had a favorite student, Roger Schweickert, who remained a close friend to the end. The majority of her teaching was at Fairfax High School and later W. T. Woodson. Following her husbands death in 1983 and her retirement in 1984 she returned to her hometown of Hillsville to care for her parents. Harriett was a long time member of the Hillsville Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed life: travel, sports, reading, cards and especially cats.
The family will receive friends an hour prior to the funeral service at the Hillsville Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, October 26, 2010 at 5 p.m. with the Rev. Kevin Campbell officiating. Reception will follow in the church fellowship hall. Interment will be on Wednesday, October 27th at 10 a.m. at the Felts Cemetery in Galax. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Twin County Humane Society, P O Box 125, Hillsville, VA 24343 designated to cat spay/neuter assistance. Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel is serving the family
