Obituary

H. Stuart Shockley Jr died September 9, 2025 at home in Meadows of Dan, VA. Stuart was born October 10, 1964 in Delaware and raised in Hillsville by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Archie and Collean Reece Terry. He was a 1983 graduate of Carroll County High School.

He was preceded in death by his mother Collean Reece Terry, his biological father Herley Stuart Shockley Sr., and his grandson David Clay Tickle. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Rebecca Carrico Shockley, and two "daddy's girls" daughters, Jennifer Shockley and Katherine Shockley. He is additionally survived by his father, Archie Ray Terry, and sister, Angela Shockley Dufresne (husband Stephen), special sister Carol Carrico Whitlock(husband Jeff), and three special brothers, Jimmy Carrico(wife Lucy), Charlie Carrico(wife Lois), and Joe Carrico(wife Sherry), and many uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and special friends. He is survived by his mother-in-law Brenda Carpenter and dear friend Larry Carpenter.

Stuart chose to spend 34 years in the US Army to serve his country. He built bridges, worked on and drove trucks, and recruited new soldiers to serve. He served as a squad leader, leading with humor and a willingness to help with any task. After retiring from the military, Stuart continued to serve by mentoring and shaping the lives of many young men and women as a JROTC instructor for Princeton Senior High School and Carroll County High School. His passion, guidance, and discipline positively impacted all who had the privilege of learning under his leadership.

Stuart was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, farming, and his newfound love of traveling in his RV. Stuart especially found great joy in sharing special hunting and fishing moments with the little ones. Whether casting a line or enjoying peacefulness in the woods, these moments brought Stuart an abundance of happiness.
