Obituary

Glenna Kemp Branscome of Hillsville, Virginia, passed away on July 13, 2016. She was born on May 21, 1922 in Dugspur, Virginia to Steve and Lula Justin "Jessie" Kemp. She grew up in the Buffalo Mountain community and attended the Buffalo Mountain Church Mission School in the early years of her education. Throughout her life she recalled wonderful memories of her youth and her family.

In 1940, she married Weldon Branscome and was his devoted wife until his death in 1991. Surviving her are: three daughters, Helen Rankin (John) of Bradenton, Florida, Margie Kark (Warren) of Christiansburg, Virginia, and Karen Casteele of Hillsville; three grandchildren, Abbie Rankin, Jenny Patterson, and Granger Casteele; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers: Herman, Frank, Arless and Roy Kemp and sisters: Gertie Kemp, Lois Starr, Lula Harris and Treva Kemp.

Glenna was the consummate homemaker. Nothing was too difficult or complicated for her. She kept an immaculate house and maintained a beautiful yard until her late eighties. She was also a great cook -- ham, steak and gravy, and fresh apple cake were among her specialties. She was an accomplished seamstress making many, many clothes for herself, her daughters, her grandchildren and their dolls and stuffed animals. She sometimes used multiple patterns for one dress to get just the right look. She crocheted and knitted blankets, Christmas decorations, baby clothes and baby shoes. When a pattern wasn't available for what she wanted to do, she created one. She made beautiful quilts with stitches as perfect on the back as the front. She loved shopping for antique furniture and refinished dozens of purchased pieces and family heirlooms. For many years she maintained one or two large gardens and would can those vegetables, fruits and meat resulting in shelves of jars every year. She was tireless and uncomplaining because she loved being a wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker.

The family will receive friends Saturday, July 23, from noon – 2 p.m. at Hillsville Presbyterian Church. A graveside service will be held prior at Buffalo Mountain Church Cemetery at 10 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, a donation to Buffalo Mountain Presbyterian Church 2102 Buffalo Road, Willis, VA 24380, Hillsville Presbyterian Church 172 S. Main Street, Hillsville, VA 24343 or Mountain Valley Hospice 1477 Carrollton Pike, Hillsville, VA 24343 will be appreciated.
