Giles "Elmo" Huff, 83, of Dugspur, passed away peacefully to his heavenly home on Thursday, October 11, 2012. He was born on October 4, 1929 in Carroll County, the son of the late Giles and Pearlie Huff of Hillsville. In addition to his father and mother, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ivil Marie Huff. Left to cherish his memory are his sons and daughters in laws, David and Carol Huff of Dumfries, VA with their daughter Julie and son Brian; and Dan and Judy Huff of Dugspur, VA with sons Robert and Joseph. He is also survived by a sister and brother in law, Mary Lee and Robert "Dike" Grisso of Altoona, AL, and a sister-in-law, Yonna Reece of Aylett, VA along with many special nieces and nephews. Elmo served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict, and followed up with his mechanical solving abilities at the B.L. Chevrolet dealership in Hillsville, VA and at rock quarries in Sylvatus, VA, and Lenoir, NC where he served in positions of manager and heavy equipment mechanic. He retired to take care of his wife for many years before her passing and showed great love and passion as her caregiver. He enjoyed and had an uncanny ability in solving mechanical and electrical problems and if a part was not available to fix something, he made it, even to the point of smelting and forming metal as blacksmiths of the past. In recent years, he developed an electric truck which he proudly drove back and forth to Hillsville from his home. He also enjoyed motorcycles early and late in his life, and was riding until just a couple of years ago when he became ill and finally succumbed to heart disease and osteoporosis. He will be remembered as a sweet, humble, hard working man, who loved the Lord, and always thought of others before himself and was always ready to lend a helping hand. He attended Pine Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Dugspur. Visitation will be Saturday, October 13, 2012 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, October 14, 2012, at 2 p.m. at Pine Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Dugspur, with Pastor Dr. Lawrence Childs officiating with remarks from layman Layne Poff. Burial and full military rights will follow at the Reece Cemetery in Dugspur. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Habitat for Humanity, his favorite charity. Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel is serving the family.
