Gerald Collin Smythers, 80, of Woodlawn, passed away on Wednesday, March 7, 2012 at Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. Smythers was born in Carroll County to the late James and Jessie Mae Guynn Smythers on April 17, 1931. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by his wife Edith Goad Smythers; three brothers; and one sister. Mr. Smythers is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law Emma S. and Dennis L. Edwards of Winston Salem, NC and Joan S. and Michael L. Miller of Kernersville, NC; step daughter Louise Jonas of Laurel Fork; brother and sister-in-law Miles and Gloria Smythers of Roanoke; grandchildren Sharon Morales, Jonathan Miller, Veronica Brown, and Matthew Miller; and one great grandson Ethan Andrew Morales. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, March 11, 2012 at Pleasant View Holiness Church at 3:00 PM with Pastor Tommy Vass officiating. Mr. Smythers will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in the Pickett Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel on Saturday, March 10, 2012 from 6:00 until 8:00 PM. Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel is serving the family.
