George Bernard
Porter
November 24, 1951 – June 12, 2019
George Bernard Porter, 67, passed away peacefully at his home on June 12, 2019, with his wife Carol by his side, after many years of a courageous struggle with a long and unfair illness.
George was born in Charlotte, NC, first born to Charles Bernard Porter, Jr and Jane Setser Porter Wells, both of whom preceded him in death. The family later moved to Salisbury, NC where George grew up. He attended Boyden High School (now Salisbury High) and later graduated from Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Virginia.
Throughout his life, George was one of those souls that you couldn't help but like from the first smile and warm greeting. He wasn't pretentious. He was a rebellious and generous spirit. He liked a good time. His laugh was infectious. He was humble and big-hearted. Once you met him, you would never forget him.
On April 11, 1992, George married the love of his life, Carol Bangle. They spent most of their years in North Carolina before moving to Laurel Fork, Virginia upon Carol's retirement from education. George had previously retired on disability from his work as a Claims Adjuster with T.M. Mayfield & Co., out of Charlotte.
George is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Carol of Laurel Fork; his loyal and loving companions, dogs, Sally and Lola; sisters Carol Golas of Denver, CO, Cathy Bell of Raleigh, NC, Beverly Wymer of Hickory, NC; step-brothers Pete Wells of Idaho Falls, ID, Darrell Wells and Christopher Wells, both of Mt. Pleasant, SC; cousin-brothers Rusty and Sandy Porter(Elizabeth); brother and sister-in-laws James Bangle (Jo), Mary Jo Johnson (Archie) and Lisa Spalding; nephews Jonathan, Michael, Spencer and Philip; nieces, Rebecca, Joanna and Rachel. To say there are countless other family and friends surviving would be an understatement.
To honor and remember George, the family suggests a charitable contribution in his name to one of the following organizations: Pulmonary Hypertension Association (PHA), Mountain Valley Hospice & Palliative Care of Mt. Airy, NC, or any charitable organization of your choice.
Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel is serving the family.
