Obituary

George S. Nester, 94, of Laurel Fork, passed away on Sunday, November 18, 2018 at Twin County Regional Hospital. Mr. Nester was born in Carroll County to the late Dewey Swanson and Julita Margaret Sutphin Nester. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his daughter, Georgie Kay Adams; and brothers, Granville Nester and Odell Nester.

Survivors include his wife of 71 years, Anna B. Nester of the home; daughters and sons-in-law, Ruana and Gary Robertson of Flagstaff, AZ and Cheryl and Jerry Wolfe of Salem, OR; sister, Christine Kimble; six grandchildren; and fourteen great-grandchildren.

On his nineteenth birthday, George joined the Marine Corp, where he spent two and a half years during World War Two. For twenty-six months of that time he was assigned to the ship the USS General A.E. Anderson, a troop transport carrying soldiers to and from overseas battlefields. He made a total of thirteen trips to the European and Pacific theaters in this role.

He was honorably discharged on November 26, 1945 with the rank of corporal. He was active in local VFW Post 1115 for several years and remained a Lifetime Member.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, November 25, 2018 at 3:00 PM at Worrell Memorial Primitive Baptist Church with Elder Gleason Worrell and Elder Dan Puckett officiating. Burial will follow in the Nester Cemetery in Laurel Fork. Military rites will be conducted by the Hillsville V.F.W. Grover King Post 1115.  The family will receive friends at the church on Sunday from 1:00 until 3:00 PM prior to the funeral service. Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel is serving the family.
