Frieda Chitwood Surratt, of Hillsville, passed away on Thursday, November 5, 2009, at home. She was the widow of Collin J. Surratt and was born April 2, 1926 in Carroll County to Howard and Ethel Marshall Chitwood who preceded her in death. She also was preceded in death by niece, Susan Jane Chitwood.

She retired from the Virginia Department of Highways January 1, 1989 with 33 years of service.

She is survived by two sons and daughter-in-law, Richard A. Surratt, Friendsville, Tennessee, and Gregory H. Surratt and wife, Teresa P. Surratt, Forest, Virginia; and a granddaughter, April Surratt Clark and husband, Joshua, and great granddaughter, Kaileigh Madison Clark, and great grandson, Collin Andrew Clark, of Virginia Beach, Virginia; and also sister, Ethel Marie Branscome, Hillsville, Virginia. and brother and sister-in-law Howard and Jane Chitwood, Longview, Texas; one niece and husband, Gina and Eric Crowder, Hillsville, Virginia; three nephews, Dennis Branscome and wife, Sara, of Sterling, Virginia, Ray A. Chitwood and wife, Cindy, of Longview Texas, and Joe H. Chitwood and wife, Regina, of Blountville, Tennessee, one great niece, Kasey Rae Chitwood, and two great nephews, Daniel Nir Branscome and Nathan Alan Branscome. She is also survived by stepmother, Lanora Quesenberry Chitwood, one stepsister and three stepbrothers.

Funeral will be held at the Hillsville Christian Church, where she had been a member since May, 1943, on Sunday, November 8, 2009 at 2:00 PM by Dr. John Dunstan. Burial will follow in Monta Vista Memory Gardens. Family will receive friends Saturday, November 7, 2009 from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel.
