Freeman Elwood Huff, 87, of Hillsville, Virginia passed away on January 9, 2026. Elwood was born on November 19, 1938, in Willis, Virginia. He was the son of the late Carl and Mary Lee Huff. Elwood lived a life marked by devotion to his family, a steady and dependable spirit, and a strength that those closest to him came to rely on.
He proudly served his country in the United States Army with the 3rd U.S. Missile Detachment, attaining the rank of Specialist (E-4). Prior to his military service, he worked in construction and took great pride in the many projects he helped build, especially the development of Andrews Air Force Base in Washington, D.C. He later became a supervisor with Burlington Industries, where he worked until retiring after 24 years of dedicated service.
Elwood is survived by his loving wife, Elizabeth Ann (Gardner) Huff, his sons, Greg and Lori Huff, Dwayne and Cindy Huff, and Kevin and Michella Huff, and his grandchildren, Brandon and Lauren Huff, Ashton and Caleb Taylor, Daniel Huff, Seiver Huff, Hallie Huff, Clare Huff, and Jansen Huff. He is also survived by many special nieces and nephews who were dear to him.
In addition to his parents, Elwood was preceded in death by each of his siblings: Luther E. Bolt, Preston Eugene Huff, Carl Lee Huff, and Stella "Cookie" Linkous.
Throughout his lifetime, Elwood developed many strong friendships who were near and dear to his heart.
Elwood leaves behind a legacy of love and family, one built through presence, consistency, and care. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Visitation and Funeral Service
Family and friends are invited to gather on Friday, January 16, 2026, at Fairview Presbyterian Church, 15 Fairview Ln, Hillsville, VA 24343. Visitation will be held from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, with the funeral service to follow at 2:00 PM. Elwood will be laid to rest at Gardner Memorial Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society, supporting lung cancer research or the Mountain Valley Hospice Center of Yadkin. These are causes especially meaningful to Elwood and those who loved him. Elwood faced life with steady strength and resolve, and his family hopes that, through these gifts, others may be helped through prevention, treatment, and research advances. Your donation in his memory is a meaningful way to honor his life and legacy.
