Franklin Leeland Mabry, 87, of Galax, passed away on Wednesday, April 18, 2012 at Twin County Regional Hospital due to natural causes. Mr. Mabry was born in West Virginia on September 9, 1924 to the late Obie and Pearlie Mabry. He served in the United States Navy and Army as a communication specialist. Mr. Mabry retired from the United States Army after 20 years of service. He was a strong supporter of and spent many hours devoted to the building of the Rescue Squad in Dugspur, Virginia. Mr. Mabry was also a loyal friend and neighbor who often drove people to the doctor and store when they were no longer able to drive. In addition to his parents Mr. Mabry was also preceded in death by his brother, Leonard Mabry of Beckley, WV and his sister, Imogene M. Wyatt of Swords Creek, VA. Surviving family members include two daughters, Bernice Alderman and husband Ronnie of Galax and Louise Johnson and husband David of Newnan, GA; his first wife Margaret Mabry of Newnan, GA; two sisters, Lala Little of Lakeland, FL and Virgie Nance of Vinton, VA; one grandson James Chris Alderman of Virginia; six great grandchildren; three nieces; four nephews; and special friends HG Mabry of Hillsville and Cheryl Bunn Poe of Galax. At the request of Mr. Mabry, there will be no services held locally. A service with Military Honors will be held in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel is serving the family.
