Obituary

Foy Owen Hawks passed away Saturday, June 9 at his beloved mountain home in Laurel Fork, Virginia. He was born on April 27, 1926 in Patrick County. He left home at age 15 to serve in the Civilian Conservation Corps and worked on several of the stone walls dotting the landscape of the Blue Ridge Parkway. He volunteered for the US Marine Corp during WW11 and served in Guantanamo Bay. He fought in the Korean War as a demolition expert while serving with the US Army's 25th Infantry Division. After his enlistment expired, he served for most of his adult life in the Marine Reserve as a Master Sergeant with the 97th Rifle Company. He married Reva Puckett in 1953 and they raised their daughters in Hampton, Virginia. He worked as a machinist in the Newport News Shipbuilding Company and retired in 1989. He spent the rest of his life at his home in Laurel Fork, Virginia where he farmed and was active in the VFW. He was an involved and supportive community member and was surrounded at his passing by the many wonderful friends and family he so enjoyed and appreciated. He is survived by his wife, Reva Puckett Hawks of the home; four daughters and sons-in-laws, Brenda Hawks and John Mayer of Boston, MA, Judy Hawks and John Saul III of Roanoke, VA, Janet and Joe Schy of Hampton, VA, and Bobbi Albright of Columbia, MD; brother and sister-in-law, Maynard and Evelyn Hawks of Valdese, NC; sister, Icy Vass of Hillsville; seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Many nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, June 13, 2012 at 2:00 PM at Rome Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor Terry McMillian, Rev. Norman Goad, and Elder Melvin McGrady officiating. Burial will follow in the Rome Cemetery where Military Rites will be conducted by Hillsville V.F.W. Post 1115. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, June 12, 2012 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM. Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel is serving the family.
