Evelyn Mae Newman, 83, of Hillsville passed away at her home on Tuesday, January 10, 2023. She was preceded in death by the love of her life and best friend, her husband Heath Newman. She was born on September 23, 1939 in Carroll County to the late James and Opal Mae Southern Parnell. She was also preceded in death by siblings Howard Parnell, Kenneth "Bud" Parnell, and June Burnette.

Evelyn is survived by her special nephew whom she loved like a son, Brian Parnell and his wife Laura Beth of Hillsville. She is also survived by her brother and sister-in-law Bernie and Teresa Parnell of Hillsville, brother and sister- in- law Paul and Joan Parnell of Fries, brother and sister-in-law Connie and Liz Parnell, of Bassett, and Roy Parnell, of Bassett, special great -nephew Cody Parnell and wife Nancy of Clovis, California and special great-niece Cheyenne Parnell, of Hillsville, and many, many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her special friend Ruth, of Pennsylvania.

She will be lovingly remembered as a woman who was fiercely independent, iron-willed, always ready with a laugh, and extraordinarily thoughtful.

Honoring her wishes, there will be a graveside service held at Newman Cemetery on Newmantown Road in Dugspur, VA on Saturday, January 14, 2023 at 11 a.m. where she will be laid to rest beside her beloved Heath.
