Obituary

Evan H. Ashby, Jr. MD of Fancy Gap, VA, passed away Feb. 14, 2018 in Hillsville. He was born August 18, 1923, in Remington, Va. He was known to many as "Doc".

He attended John Barton Payne High School, Randolph Macon College, and received his Medical degree from the University of Virginia in 1951.

He served in the U.S. Army during WWII and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a lifetime member of the American Legion.

While in Remington he practiced family medicine and attended the births of over 1600 babies.

He also served on the Remington Town Council, served as Mayor of Remington, and was elected to the Fauquier County Board of Supervisors. He served as Chief of Staff of the Fauquier Hospital in 1968.

Dr. Ashby was medical advisor for athletic teams at Fauquier High School from 1963 to 1969.

In 1969 he was named Director of Medical Services at Appalachian State University and continued in this position until his retirement in 1991. While at ASU he continued his love of working with young athletes and sports teams and never missed an ASU football game.

He was an avid photographer and took thousands of pictures of the sports teams, wildlife, and medical services.

Dr. Ashby was Medical Examiner in North Carolina and Virginia until his 85 th birthday.

He was a charter member of the Remington Rescue Squad and served in the fire department. He also was a member of the Watauga County Rescue Squad where he served a stint as Chief.

After his retirement he moved to Fancy Gap and continued his love of emergency service by becoming a member of the Cana VFD.

Other accomplishments include President of the Remington Lions Club, member of the N.C. Aids task force, and he was Professor Emeritus at Appalachian State.

Dr. Ashby is survived by his children Kee Ashby Miller and her husband, Bill, of Culpeper, VA, Evan H Ashby III and wife Brenda of Remington, and William W. Ashby and wife Dawn of Remington. Eight grandchildren: Allison M. Clatterbuck, Carrie M. Butler, Amy Ashby, Dr. Courtney Ashby, Hollie Ashby, Evan Ashby IV, Blair Ashby, and Robert Ashby, and seven great-grandchildren.

The family would like to thank Priscilla Sawyers and her family for the tender care she provided him during his last months.

There will be a celebration of Doc's life at the Cana fire house on March 3 at 1:00 p.m. Interment will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to Remington United Methodist Church, P.O.
