Eula Vernell McCormick, 86, passed away on September 25, 2025 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born on December 8, 1938 to the late Luther and Elva Thomas Horton in Carroll County, Va.
Left with cherished memories are 3 sons along with their spouses; David and Regina McCormick of Galax, Ronnie and Deborah McCormick of Galax, along with Larry and Nancy McCormick of Hillsville. Vernell cherished her grandchildren who along with their spouses include: Nathaniel and Cindy McCormick of Galax, Ashley and Michael Starkey of Galax, Holly and Jason Budden of Myrtle Beach, Michaela and Ethan Huff of Hillsville, and Joseph and Anna McCormick of Galax. Six great grandchildren have been blessed by her love. They include McKenzie and Braxton Starkey, Parker McCormick, Lydia and Elsie Huff as well as Flynn Budden. Nephew, Carlon Horton of Hillsville also survives. Peggy Quesinberry Gardner of Richmond, Va, survives as her special, heartfelt sister.
Her devoted husband of 61 years; Billy Dean McCormick passed on April 7, 2020. Vernell was also preceded in death by her brother, Alfred Horton as well as two infant great grandchildren, Garrett Starkey and Millie Huff.
Vernell served as a Secretary for the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) at the Hillsville District office. She retired in 1995 after 25 years of devoted service.
As a member of the Gladesboro Lutheran Church, Vernell shared her talents in many roles including Council Secretary & Treasurer, Sunday School Superintendent and Church Historian. She loved working with the children and youth teaching Sunday School, directing Vacation Bible School and serving as a Cub Scout Den Mother. She enjoyed helping others by participating in the Women's Circle, Gladesboro AAL outreach Ministries and was hostess of the "Cup of Joy" Coffee Club.
The family will receive friends on October 4, 2025 beginning at 10 a.m. at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Funeral Home in Hillsville. The Memorial Service will follow at 11 a.m. She will be laid to rest at the Gladesboro Lutheran Cemetery. In Lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Gladesboro Lutheran Church Cemetery Fund, 3486 Gladesboro Road, Hillsville, Va 24343. Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel is serving the family.
