Obituary

Elizabeth "Betty" York Wilson Humphreys, 87 of Hillsville, passed away on Saturday, January 10, 2026.  Betty was born on January 26,1938. Her parents were Elizabeth "Lib" Wilson and Julius Vassie Wilson Jr.  She also had a brother, Robert "Bob" Wilson. Her family originated in High Point, NC, but they then relocated to Sanford, NC.

As Betty was entering High School, they moved to Bristol, Tennessee. During her Senior year of High School, she met Levi Humphreys, who was a student at King College in Bristol.  They married a year later on September 10, 1956.

Betty and Levi moved to Richmond, Va where Levi attended Union Theological Seminary. Cindy was born on August 26, 1958. When Cindy was only 10 days old, Betty entered Virginia Commonwealth University. She could remember ironing Cindy's ruffles on her dresses and baby clothes and studying at the same time. She completed her course of study in 3 years and received a BS degree in Sociology with a minor in Psychology. After seminary they were offered their first churches in Littleton and Burlington, NC. Diane was born on April 8, 1963.

In 1967 the family moved to Fuquay Varina, NC where Betty became involved with many church activities, including teaching Sunday school, singing in the choir, working with the youth group, bible school and Brownie Scouts. She enjoyed working with children of all ages and started teaching at a local private school.

While driving through Raleigh one day, Hudson Belk caught her eye. Betty became their new Bridal Consultant and Head of China and Crystal department. She enjoyed working with Belk for over 18 years. She met so many interesting people and worked with so many of the Belk employees who became lifelong friends.

Upon retirement She and Levi moved to Southwest Virginia, where Levi ministered to two churches, Dinwiddie Presbyterian and Fairview Presbyterian. They loved this area so much that they purchased a home in Fancy Gap. Betty made many close friends and was involved in many church activities.

Betty was the mother of two daughters, Cindy and Diane; grandmother of five, Al, Joshua, Alex, Anna and Joseph; and great-grandmother to Moss and Obi Sacco.
