Obituary

Effie Mae Carter, beloved mother, grandmother and sister, age 93, of Austinville, VA was called home by angels on Friday, May 2, 2014 at Waddell Nursing Home. Mae was born in Carroll County to the late John and Pearlie Beasley Horton. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Titus Beverly Carter; seven brothers, Eugene Horton, Lester Horton, William "Bill" Horton, Bernie Horton, Roscoe Horton, Raymond Horton, and Lee Horton; three sisters, Elma Jean "Sissy" Mabe, Virginia Edwards and Faye Lineberry; daughter-in-law, Agnes Carter, two granddaughters, Terry Holston and Diana Carter; and one great grandchild, Joshua Cox. She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, June Burcham of Hillsville, Lola and Lake Newman of Woodlawn, Nina Reece of Woodlawn, and Carolyn and Eddie Russell of Galax; sons and daughters-in-law, Lester and Linda Carter, David and Doris Carter, and Chester Carter, all of Austinville; 15 grandchildren and spouses, Sharon Reaves, Richard and Connie Reaves, April and Matthew Surratt, Brian Carter and Ruthie Huff, Scott Carter, Andrea Cox and Brent Hiatt, Sally and Robert Hill, John and Pam Carter, Alison and Trever Watson, Heather and Jamie Lucas, Daniel and Angela Carter, Michelle and Travis Austin, Kim and Jimmy Roberts, Jimmy and Jessica Russell and Timmy and Melissa Russell; 23 great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; two sisters, Rubye Edwards and Artie Bell Primm; and sisters-in-law Vera Horton, Esther Surratt, Virginia Vaughn, and Evelyn Frost; brothers-in-law, Lee Mabe and Clyde Lineberry; as well as many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, May 4, 2014 at 4:00 PM at Coulson Church of the Brethren with Rev. Harry Shelton and Rev. Russell Payne officiating. Burial will follow in Coulson Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church on Sunday from 2:00 PM until service time. Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel is serving the family.
