Doris Ayers
Hurst
September 28, 1929 – July 20, 2017
Doris Hurst, 87, of Hillsville passed away at her home on July 20, 2017.
Doris was born on September 28, 1929 in Greensboro North Carolina to Merle DeHaven and Joyce B. Ayers.
After graduating from Hillsville High School, she married the love of her life, Oren Hurst, and together, they raised four children - Carl, Scott, Eddy, and Kelly.
Doris worked for Sprague Electric for 30 years and retired from the Specification Engineering Department as a Specification Writer. She wrote manufacturing specifications that went to the factory floor to build product orders, reviewed and interpreted customer drawings for new parts which she converted to manufacturing specifications, and liaised with the Sales Department to design sample parts for qualification.
She was a member of the Hillsville Presbyterian Church for over 60 years and served as a member of the Session.
In retirement, Doris and Oren enjoyed traveling with friends across the United States and spending time with their grandchildren.
Doris believed that economic and social justice would strengthen us individually and as a country. She avidly championed these causes with the admonition that we should treat others as we would want to be treated.
She is survived by her children, nine grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Presbyterian Children's Home of the Highlands.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, July 29, 2017 at 1:00 PM at the Hillsville Presbyterian Church with Rev. Kevin Campbell officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from Noon to 1:00 PM.
Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel is serving the Hurst family.
