Obituary

Doris “Dot” Jones

May 18, 1934 – November , 2026

Doris “Dot” Jones, 92, of Hillsville, Virginia, passed away on November 3 surrounded by her family. Born on May 19, 1934, she spent her life teaching others, feeding the people she loved, and making beautiful things by hand. She was most proud of being a mother to her four boys.

Dot started her college career at Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk, NC and then transferred to Roanoke College where she graduated with her Bachelor’s. After graduation, she married the late Dr. Ronald “Ronnie” D. Jones and moved to Richmond, VA where she taught in the school system and he attended dental school. Later in life, she earned her master’s degree from Virginia Tech.

During her professional career Dot worked as a schoolteacher and reading specialist, teaching in the Carroll County School system for 30 years. In the latter part of her career, she focused on reading remediation through the use of phonics, helping children who struggled to find their footing as readers. Countless students and colleagues were touched by her kindness and knowledge.

Outside the classroom, Dot loved preparing big family meals, tending her garden, observing wildlife, reading, and studying scripture. Her love of reading spilled over into her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren as she loved buying them beautifully illustrated books to enjoy. She also loved quilting and sewing, not only for her family but anyone she felt could use a special gift. Her love for her family and friends lives on through what she made. Above all, she enjoyed spending time with her sons, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

She was also a devoted and active member of First United Methodist Church of Hillsville for many years. Recently, she attended Hillsville Pentecostal Holiness Church. Her faith was the foundation of her life, and she faithfully shared the Lord with her family. She believed in continual study of scripture to deepen ones faith and knowledge.

Dot is survived by her three sons, J. David Jones and wife Karen of Forest, VA; Adam Y. Jones of Forest, VA; and Ethan Y. Jones and wife Melissa of Elkin, NC; her sister, Dianne Foster, and brother-in-law, Kenneth (Ken) of Knoxville, TN; five grandchildren, Emily Jones of Forest, VA, Sarah Peed and husband Lucas of Bedford, VA, Hannah Cumberland and husband Josh of Butler, PA, Ethan C. Jones of Stuart, FL, and Nathaniel E. Jones of Galax, VA; four great-grandchildren, Oliver, Addison (Addie), Jameson, and Annabelle; and two nephews; Matt Foster and wife Tiffany of Knoxville, TN, Clark Foster and wife Cindy of Knoxville, TN, and many other beloved family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jean Dalton (JD) and Mabel Young; her second eldest son, Edward “Ed” D. Jones; and her sister, Phyllis Young.

Visitation will be held from 5:00pm-6:30pm on November 5, 2026 at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Funeral Home in Hillsville, VA. Immediately following the visitation at 6:30 the funeral service will be held. Internment and graveside service will follow on Friday, November 6th at 10:00am in the Wilkinson Memorial Cemetery of Hillsville, VA.
