After a long illness, Doris Riddle Childs, 88 of Hillsville, died on March 27, 2023 in Galax, Virginia. She was born in Spartanburg, SC to the late Herbert Lee Riddle and Laura Branch Riddle. She was preceded in death by her sister Mary Ann Marx, brother Curtis Riddle, brother Freeman Riddle, sister Lois Taylor and brother Herbert Riddle.
She is survived by her husband S. Lawrence Childs, Jr; sister Linda King and husband Marshall, brother Arthur Riddle and sister Janice Sanders; daughter Wanda Childs, son Greg Childs and wife Heather, grandchildren Nathaniel Ellis, Zachary Ellis, Benjamin Ellis, Luke Childs and wife Caroline, Nick Childs and wife Abby, Naomi Childs, Daniel Childs, Joshua Childs and Henry Childs.
Doris graduated from Roebuck High School in SC. She worked as a bookkeeper and homemaker. She loved nature, gardening, flowers, music, basketball, working with children, and reading. She was a great cook, an engaging and avid talker, and never met a stranger. But most of all she loved her family and the hundreds of people who she encouraged along the way. She was driven to do the best and be the best that she could be.
She left behind a legacy of love, laughter and life-giving memories. We love you dearly and will miss you.
Her celebration of life will be Friday, April 7 th at First Baptist Church, Hillsville, Va. With the visitation at noon and the service at 1:00 with a meal to follow. Rev. Ryan Mills, Dr. Randy Wadford and Rev. Tina Burleson will be leading the service. Donations can be given to World Hunger through First Baptist Church, Hillsville. Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel is serving the family.
