Obituary

Don Hall, age 85, died on Friday, June 22 at his home in Hillsville, VA where he had resided for the past seven years.

Born at Forks of the Creek, Jackson County, FL, he lived with his family in Dover, Hillsborough County, FL until his service in World War II. Don was predeceased by his parents Mack and Ruby, and brothers Max, Randy, John and Raymond.

Don entered the service in October 1940 when his National Guard unit was mobilized. He served with Battery B, 149th Field Artillery, 31st Division in the Pacific, seeing action in New Guinea and the Philippines before the Japanese surrender. Afterwards, as a member of the 441st Counter Intelligence Corp, he served with the occupation forces in Japan. He accompanied Emperor Hirohito during the emperors tour of the nation after the war, receiving a box of cigars from the emperor for his role.

Subsequently, he remained with the Armys Counter Intelligence Corp, continuing in active service until his retirement as the Chief Warrant Officer in 1962 in Washington, DC. With his family, Don lived at posts in Texas, California, Japan, Tennessee, Germany and Washington, DC.

After retirement, he began another career, working as an administrator at Bay County Hospital in Panama City, FL before joining the Civil Service. He worked as administrator of DC Village, a geriatric facility in Washington, DC until his civilian retirement in 1983.

A devout Christian, loving husband, attentive father and grandfather, his passing is mourned and his life celebrated by his surviving family: wife of fifty-seven years Barbara; daughter Donna and husband, Steve Quesenberry; their sons Sean; Stephen and wife Natalie and three great grandchildren, Veronica, Sophia and Scarlett; his son Ron Hall and wife Linda and grandson Damon; his younger son Ken Hall and wife Debbie, their children Christy Elphick and husband Brad and great grandson Kyle, Dustin Hall and wife Hope and great grandchildren Carson, Abigail and Tristan.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, June 28th at 4:00 PM at Sylvatus Christian Church. Military rites will be conducted by the Hillsville V.F.W. Post 1115. In lieu of flowers or other offerings, the family request an offering be made to Twin County Hospice 308 South Main Street P.O. Box 106 Galax, VA 24333, The Salvation Army, or to the charity of your choice.
