Obituary

Dewey Ray Caviness, 81 years old of Austinville, Virginia, died on December 18, 2025 in his home surrounded by his family.  His daughter, Joanna Myers sang "Go Rest High on that Mountain".  Dewey was born, September 28, 1944 to the late George Washington Caviness and Georgia Ellen (Parnell) Caviness.  He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Alvin Caviness and June Caviness and his sisters, Eloise Clontz, Iris Coble, and Amanda Ogle.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, June Marie (Akers) Caviness; sons, Mark Caviness and Paul Caviness; and daughter, Joanna Myers (David).  He is also survived by his grandchildren, Kendal Myers, Brayden Myers, Amy Jo Bowman, Josh Caviness, Johanah Gallimore, Joclyn Gallimore and Emily Payne; great-grandchildren, Brewer Bowman, Paden Cregger, Kinsley Cregger, Malaia Caviness and Keyanna Caviness; and siblings, Mamie Brooks, Claudia Mabe, Marie Rosenbaum, Cora Lindsey, and Betty Clyburn.  Dewey had a special place in his heart for his little fur baby, Lucy and also his niece, Vaneta Willard, who was helping take care of Dewey.

Dewey retired from Carroll County Public Schools.  He drove a bus for many years and also worked in the school bus garage.  After he retired, he drove a car for the school, taking kids home.

Dewey will be missed by many that would stop in his garage and talk to him.  When he couldn't walk up there, he would pack a snack and drive up to the garage in the golf cart and strip copper and watch TV until someone came to talk with him.

It's time, I guess, to park the old golf cart, for now, put away the snacks, and hold on tight to all the memories, for there are many.

A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, December 27, 2025 at 3:00 PM at Hillsville Pentecostal Holiness Church with Pastor Jeff Pickett officiating.  Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel is serving the family.
