Denise P. Cox, 61, of Mount Airy, NC passed away on Saturday, April 25, 2015 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born in Mount Airy, NC April 28, 1953. Denise was preceded in death by her father Russell A. Poore, Survivors include her husband, Jerry E. Cox of Hillsville; sons, Jordan A. Cox, and Jared A. Cox both of Hillsville; mother, Wanda Weddle Poore of Hillsville; brother, Allen Poore of Fishersville, VA; sisters, Janice Stokes and husband Bobby of Mocksville, NC, Shannon Brown and husband Mike of Woodlawn; niece, Cathryn Brannock and husband Barry of Hillsville; nephew, Caleb Taylor of Woodlawn; two great nieces, Emma Brannock, and Katlyn Brannock of Hillsville; step-nephews, Brandon and Bradley Stokes of Mocksville, NC. Denise was a graduate of Carroll County High School; she received her BS Degree in special education and Masters Degree in early childhood development from James Madison University. Her work as a special education teacher and early childhood development specialist spanned a career of 37 years. She made a memorable impact on children with special needs during her public education career. Denise had a talent for home decorations and interior design as well as antique furniture collecting. She dearly loved her cocker spaniels especially Tory and Caydee. Denise was an avid Virginia Tech Football fan. She attended numerous home, away and major bowl games with her family and friends over the past 30 years. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, April 30, 2015 at 1:00 PM at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel with Pastor Wendell Horton officiating. Burial will follow in the Oakdale Cemetery in Mount Airy, NC. The family will receive friends at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel on Wednesday, April 29, 2015 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. and on Thursday, April 30, 2015 from 12:00 to 1:00 PM. In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorial donations be made to the North Carolina Association of Educators, Foundation for Public School Children, Raleigh, NC, or to the Carroll - Grayson Humane Society, or to the Surry Animal Rescue, Mount Airy, NC. Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel is serving the Cox family.
