Danny Joe Sutherland, 70, died Wednesday, September 6, 2017 at his home in Laurel Fork, Virginia. He was born in New Albany, IN on 10/22/1946, the son of Oscar and Francis Grubb Sutherland.  He served 21 years in the United States Army, achieving the rank of First Sergeant.  He retired from military service in 1987.   He then worked for Veolia Environmental, Inc. until retirement.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Thomas and John (infant), and sister, Aliene Francis (infant).

He is survived by his wife, Kristina Ossont Sutherland and his beloved service dog, Bristol, of Laurel Fork, VA; two step sons, Robert Smith (Mara) of Port St. Lucie, FL and James Smith (Dani) of Port Leyden, NY; daughters, LaDonna Mari Sutherland (Brook) of Edisto Beach, SC and Marti Jo Sutherland of Lanesville, IN; step daughter, Sara Smith of Port Leyden, NY; parents in law, John and Linda Jones of Remsen, NY; brothers, Hollis Sutherland (Bonita) of Mauckport, IN, Darrell Sutherland (Shirley) of St. Maria, CA, Virgil Sutherland (Jean) of Hattieville, AR, Alvin "Butch" Sutherland of Leavenworth, IN, and Keith Sutherland (Barbara) of Mauckport, IN; brother in Law, James Ossont of Remsen, NY; sisters, Joyce Beard (Clyde) of Georgetown, IN; sisters-in-Law, Elaine Sutherland of Elizabeth, IN and Judy Ossont (Eric) of Remsen, NY; and grandchildren, Trenton Robinson (Emma) of Georgetown, KY and Dillon and Austin Scott of Lanesville, IN.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Thursday, September 14, 2017, at Gehlbach & Royse Funeral home in Corydon, IN. Visitation will be Wednesday from 1-8 and Thursday 9-1 at the funeral home.  Burial will follow at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors.  He will be laid to rest with his beloved Dixie.
