Coy E. Vaughn, 84 of Max Meadows, passed away on Friday, October 5, 2018, at his home.  Coy was born in Carroll County to the late Daniel and Susie Webb Vaughn. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.

Survivors include his wife, Mavis Surratt Vaughn; daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Gary Ogle and Kim and David Bentley; son, Bruce Vaughn; grandchildren, Kayla Peeler (husband, Eric), Brittney Surratt, Sarah Vaughn, and Jesse Vaughn; great-grandchildren, Hunner Alderman, Elijah Martin, River Cromer, Raymon Peeler, and AnnaLee Vaughn; sisters, Guida Hillick and Ann Austin; and brothers, Aubrey Dean Vaughn and Emory "Bob" Vaughn.

Coy served in the United States Army, spending most of his service in Germany, then Fort Mead, Maryland. He retired from the Radford Army Ammunition Plant after 31 years. During the 70's he was a volunteer firefighter with the Barren Springs Fire Department. Raising cattle and maintaining the family farm was his passion. There were never enough hours in the day.

He enjoyed bluegrass music and never missed The Galax Old-Time Fiddler's Convention. Bill Monroe was his hero. He may not have known his family recently, but he sure knew who Bill was.

His motto was always "more is better". If a recipe called for 2 cups of sugar. He allotted 3. He fertilized the yard so often you could literally watch the grass grow. His chainsaw was just an extension of his arm. Fence building, harvesting the hay field and stacking firewood were just a fun game. His "church" was The Farm.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 8, 2018 at Charity Primitive Baptist Church at 3:00 PM with Rev. Don Singleton  officiating.  Burial will follow in the Pickett Cemetery.  Military rites will be conducted by the Hillsville VFW Grover King Post 1115.  The family will receive friends at the church on Monday from 1:00 until 3:00 PM prior to the funeral service. In lieu of flowers donations to Picket Cemetery are greatly appreciated. Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel is serving the family.
