Charles William
Worley
August 11, 1920 – October 21, 2019
Charles William Worley, age 99, of Hillsville, VA, went to be with his Savior on October 21, 2019, surrounded by his loving family.
Charles lived his life as he lived his days: hard-working, steadfast, strong, curious and generous. He never met a person from whom he could not learn something. He shared the wisdom of these values and his respect for the dignity of every person through his beautiful, humble stories of a life well-lived.
His life changed the moment he saw Blanche Painter. They married in 1942 and loved each other deeply for nearly 75 years until her death in 2017.
Born to Charles B. and Arcie Ola Branch Worley on August 11, 1920 in Arnold's Valley, VA he joined the James Lees & Sons (later, Burlington Industries) textile plant in Glasgow, VA as a teenager. He served in the Army Air Corps in Italy during World War II. After the war he resumed his career and later helped establish and manage the Burlington plant in Dahlonega, GA, from 1955-1969. He managed the Burlington plant in Hillsville, VA from 1969 until he retired in 1982. He was a valued consultant within the company, listening to and empowering all levels of employees in facilities across North America to help him improve the business. He loved how his job presented him with a new line of problems to solve each day. After retirement, he traveled and ran a successful flea-market business with Blanche.
Among his favorite pastimes were gardening, bird hunting with his beloved dog Prince, fishing at Lake Lanier, winter trips to Florida, country music and relaxing with his family on the deck or at the beach.
Charles is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law William and Jane Worley, Marietta, GA; Stan and Teresa Worley, Dawsonville, GA; Gary and Sandie Worley, Blacksburg, VA; daughter and son-in-law Kathy and Thomas Ratcliffe, Waynesville, NC; sisters-in-law May Worley and Beatrice Carr, fourteen grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
