Charles Roger Harmon, 75 of Austinville, went home to be with the Lord on May 21, 2017 after a brief and hard fought battle with cancer. Roger was born January 7, 1942 to Clell and Goldie Smythers Harmon. After his service in Vietnam he returned home and then married Barbara Ann Flanagan on November 17, 1967. They shared 49 years together in marriage. Roger was a barber for over 40 years and was quite a jokester. He loved his customers dearly. He was an avid rail fan and a lifetime member of VFW Post 1115. He served as a deacon at Pine Grove Primitive Baptist Church.
He is survived by his mother Goldie and his wife Barbara. He was preceded in death by his father Clell. He is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Cora Mae and Elder Edward Bowman. Roger is also survived by their three children and spouses, Mark and Chandra Harmon, Krista and Steve Burnette, and Michael and Trish Harmon. He was a doting grandfather to Christopher, Courtney, Sarah, Caleb, Abby, Whitney and her husband, Rick, and step grandson, Gideon. He is also survived by brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Harvey and Martha Flanagan and Roger and Carol Sue Bond. Roger also had many special friends, cousins, a niece and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 25, 2017 at 11:00 AM at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel with Elder Ronnie Bowman and Elder Edward Bowman officiating. Burial will follow in the Beasley Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the Hillsville V.F.W. Grover King Post 1115. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, May 24, 2017 from 5:00 until 8:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Pine Grove Primitive Baptist Church in the Laurel Community. Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel is serving the family.
