Cecil Oren
Melton
May 27, 1927 – January 19, 2018
Cecil Oren Melton, 90, of Hillsville, went to see Jesus on Friday, January 19, 2018. Being the youngest of nine children, he was born in the Woodlawn section of Carroll County on May 27, 1927 to Elmer and Jane B. Melton.
He is survived by his caring daughter, Patricia M. Alderman, special grandson David Alderman, Vinton, Virginia and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife and partner of 64 years, Pauline A. Melton, son-in-law, Nelson Alderman, three brothers, Otho Melton, Onza Melton, and Olen Melton, five sisters, Sena Bowman, Mary Amburn, Lillie Bunn, Freida Vass, and Pearl Bunn.
Cecil was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He loved helping and sharing with others, but found it hard to receive without giving something back in return.
Operating a Grade A Dairy was Cecil's main occupation. In 1972, he was named by the New River Soil and Water Conservation District to receive a Conservation Award. In addition, his multi-talents were evident in his many other skills and interests. He was a farmer, builder, planner, woodworker, and crafter. Often, starting plants from seed, he took great pride in his tomatoes, vegetables, apples, and flower gardens. Notably, he sold 35 boxes of tomatoes in one gathering. As long as he was on the move, his home was a show place of bounty and beauty for all to admire. Being a long-time member of Fancy Gap United Methodist Church, he served in many capacities and his woodworking talent can be seen in the large cross he made for the church.
Through later years, Cecil struggled with not being able to work outside as he had once done. It was his heart's desire to continue keeping the place up. In his mind, hard work was a given. He found joy in talking and sharing stories with friends and family. His face would light up as he caught up on the news and reminisced earlier times.
A celebration of his life will begin as the family receives friends and family at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel in Hillsville from 6:00 until 8:00 PM on Tuesday, January 23, 2018. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, January 24, 2018 at Fancy Gap United Methodist Church with the Pastor Kay Seay and Pastor John Whitman officiating. Interment will follow at the Independence Cemetery.
To those who knew Cecil, please remember his giving ways and be blessed in having known him. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Please honor him by making donations to Fancy Gap United Methodist Church or to the Independence Cemetery.
The family wishes to express appreciation and thanks to the dedicated doctors and nurses of Northern Surry Hospital, to all the caring, supportive staff at Surry Community Health and Rehab, and to the many caregivers that helped in his care.
