Carolyn Pierce
Hawks
August 27, 1934 – February 3, 2018
Carolyn Pierce Hawks, 83, of Fancy Gap, Virginia, Wife of Morris Hawks and Mother of David, Jonathan and Andrew departed this life February 3, 2018. Carolyn was born in Dyersburg Tennessee August 27, 1934 and was preceded in death by her parents, EL and Sue McClanahan Pierce, and is survived by her Husband with whom she celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary last October, Sons David, Jonathan, Andrew and wife Cheryl and several cousins in Tennessee.
At the age of eleven Carolyn's parents moved to Martinsville, Virginia where she would later meet and marry Morris Hawks. Soon after their marriage Morris' whirlwind career began and for the remainder of her life she became a devoted mother and housewife with the many frustrations associated with house hunting, picking out floor covering and drapes, and acclimating herself and children to what at one time appeared to be an unending chore, from the Carolinas to Texas, New Jersey and eventually back to Fancy, Gap, Virginia.
Along the way at various locations Carolyn served as President of the Shelby, N.C. Junior Woman's Club, was a Pink Lady at the Shelby and Galax Hospitals, was active in PTA, an Assistant Cub Scout Leader, Playgrounds Assistant at Denville New Jersey Intermediate School, and served as Administrative Board Secretary for a number of years at Hillsville United Methodist Church where she was a member. Carolyn's family knew she could cook the best meal ever put on a table. She was a hard nose conservative politically who had done door to door campaigning but one very liberal in supporting causes she felt compassionate about.
In Retirement, as can be said about most housewives, she never retired. She was a devoted reader, despised a foggy day and enjoyed the sunny days and cool summer nights of the Blue Ridge Mountains. COPD restricted her activity considerably in her latter years. At Carolyn's request there was no public viewing and a private Graveside Funeral was conducted by Reverend Howard Thompson as Carolyn's tired body was laid to rest at Morris Family Cemetery and she await's a future reunion with family, friends and her Savior Jesus Christ.
The Hawks family is greatly appreciative of the tender thoughtful loving care given to Carolyn by caregivers Linda Graham, Edie Bevins, and Cindy Felts, for the love and friendship shown by Jeanice and Tony York of Asheboro, NC. And the best neighbor Carolyn ever had, Marilyn Thompson.
Memorials may be made to Galax First United Methodist Church, Health and Welfare Fund, 306 West Center St. Galax, VA 24333.
The family was assisted by Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Funeral Home.
