Bonnie Lou Hanks, 82, of Woodlawn, Virginia, passed away on Sunday, January 25, 2026. Bonnie was born on September 12, 1943, in Carroll County, Virginia, to the late Eckman and Clydie Alderman. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 57 years, Guy Marvin Hanks; her brother, Clinton Alderman; and her sister, Linda Alderman. She is survived by her three children, Marvin (Jennifer) Hanks, Angela (Keith) MacKay, and Michael (Kim) Hanks; two siblings, Elwood (Shirley) Alderman and Delphia (Belford) Cook; nine grandchildren, William, Amber, Heather, Ashley, Hannah, Jake, Thomas, Kelsey, and Hayden; and five great-grandchildren, Carter, Casey, Colton, Wilhelmina, and Eleanor. She also leaves behind numerous in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews, and many dear friends.
Bonnie married Guy in 1962 and moved to Washington, D.C., where she began her lifelong role as a devoted wife and mother. From 1968 to 1980, they lived in Brandywine, Maryland, where they raised their three children, Marvin, Angie, and Michael. In 1980, they moved to Clarks Run in La Plata, Maryland, where they resided until 2005. After retirement, Bonnie and Guy returned to Hillsville, Virginia, where they lived until his passing in 2020. In the years that followed, her children brought her back to La Plata, where she spent the remainder of her life surrounded by family. Bonnie was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of La Plata, where her faith remained an important part of her life. For 43 years, she lovingly served families in her community as a dedicated daycare provider, caring for a countless number of children. She was an exceptional seamstress, enjoyed landscaping alongside her husband, and treasured time spent with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and many friends and neighbors. Her love for her family was the center of her life.
The funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 7, at 11:00 a.m. at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel in Hillsville, Virginia, with Pastor Jeff Pickett officiating. Interment will follow at Monta Vista Memory Gardens in Galax, Virginia. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. A repast will be held following the burial at Hillsville Pentecostal Holiness Church. A celebration of life will also be scheduled at a later date in La Plata, Maryland.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hillsville Pentecostal Holiness Church or First Baptist Church of La Plata, Maryland.
