Betty Tipton Edwards of Virginia Beach, Virginia died on Tuesday, August 25, 2009 at Pine Meadows Assisted Living in Woodstock, Virginia. She was born on July 11, 1923 in Mt. Airy, North Carolina and grew up in Hillsville, Virginia. She was the daughter of George Ellison Edwards and Aline Foster Edwards of Hillsville, Virginia. Her only brother, George Foster Edwards died in action during WWII.
She was a graduate of Longwood University, Farmville, Virginia; Pan-American Business College Richmond, Virginia; and Appalachian State University, Boone, North Carolina.
As a librarian, she taught at Virginia Beach High School and Tidewater Community College, Virginia Beach, Virginia.
She was a member of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Princess Anne County Chapter; a member of the Virginia Beach Library Association, the Eastern Shore Chapel Episcopal Church, Virginia Beach, Virginia; and a member and past chair of the Princess Anne County Republican Party.
She volunteered at many of Virginia Beach's landmarks including the Old Coast Guard Station Museum, the Boardwalk Art Show, Neptune's Art and Craft Show, and Holiday Lights on the Boardwalk.
She is survived by her first cousin W. Rush Gardner and his wife, Dorothy Warner Gardner of Warsaw, Virginia, and a number of other cousins.
A graveside service will be held at noon on Saturday, August 29, 2009 at the Wilkerson Memorial Cemetery, Hillsville, Virginia. Condolences may be sent in care of George Shaffer, PO Box 487, Woodstock, Virginia 22664. Donations may be made to a favorite charity.
