October 10, 1927 – October 21, 2008
Avis H. Collier, 81 of Dugspur, VA went to be with his Lord on Tuesday, October 21, 2008. Mr. Collier was born in Dugspur on October 10, 1927, the last surviving member of the six children of O.C. Collier and Mattie Webb Collier. Avis was a retired Texaco/Citgo dealer and member of Bethel Brethren in Christ Church, as well as former four-term member of the Carroll County Board of Supervisors, former member of the Carroll County School Board, and Dugspur Rescue Squad founding member. Construction projects completed under Mr. Colliers leadership include Carroll County High School, Carroll County Administrative Complex, Carroll County Industrial and Recreation Parks and numerous other projects. Avis also served on the founding committee of the current Twin County Regional Healthcare Hospital, as well as serving in the United States Army. Mr. Collier continued the family tradition of public service established by his grandfather John Collier, who had also served as county supervisor and school board member.
Mr. Collier was also predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Blanche Phillips Collier; a grandson, Jonathan Collier Boyd; two sisters; and three brothers. He is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Becky and Roger Alderman, Debbie and Nelson Goad, and Jill and Zane Saunders, all of Carroll County. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Isaac and Anna Saunders and Roger Alderman, Jr.: sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Helen Collier, Naomi Collier, Jim Michael, Minnie Hull, Vesta and Lincoln Quesenberry, James Phillips, Jordan and Vivian Phillips; and many nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held Thursday, October 23, 2008 at 11:00 AM at Cox Cemetery beside the Dugspur Rescue Squad Building. The Rev. Carl Ginder will officiate. The family will receive friends following the service at the squad building. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the Dugspur Rescue Squad or Bethel Brethren in Christ Church. Appreciation is extended to Skyline Manor Nursing Home angels and Good Samaritan Hospice.
