Obituary

Arthur Lawrence Noblett, Jr., affectionately known as A.L., peacefully passed away at his new home in Mt. Airy, North Carolina, on April 17, 2025, at the age of 92. He was born on May 12, 1932, in Spring Valley, Virginia, to the late Arthur Lawrence Noblett, Sr. and Lue EIIa Cline Noblett.

A.L. is survived by his devoted wife of 42 years, Edna L. Noblett; his children and their spouses: Melvin and Lorrie Myers, Michael and Vicki Myers, Melissa and Johnny Hiatt, and Melody and Gary Surratt; his sister-in-law, Mary L. Coulson, as well as 13 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren, all of whom brought great joy to his life.

Raised in Woodlawn, A.L. graduated from Woodlawn High School in 1949 before enlisting in the U.S. Navy. He proudly served for four years aboard the USS Sperry. Following his honorable discharge, A.L. pursued higher education, earning a Bachelor of Education degree from Emory & Henry College in 1960 and a Master's of Education from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) in 1963.

A lifelong advocate for education, A.L. dedicated 31 years to Carroll County Public Schools. He served in various roles at Gossan Mines, Hillsville, and Gladeville Elementary Schools, and Woodlawn Intermediate. He took particular pride in his 18 years as the second principal of Carroll County High School, where he touched the lives of countless students and faculty alike.

A committed member of the Presbyterian faith, A.L. served in various positions within Abingdon Presbytery and at both Fairview and Hillsville Presbyterian Churches.

In addition to his work in education, A.L. was deeply involved in community and fraternal organizations. Following in his father's footsteps, he became a member of the Masons, joining Old Town Lodge on September 11, 1956. He was also a devoted member of the Hillsville Masonic Lodge #193 A.F. & A.M., Scottish Rites, Kazim Temple of Roanoke, and the Grayson-Carroll Shrine Club. In 2003, A.L. made history as one of the first from the Twin County area to join the Royal Order of Jesters, a testament to his leadership and commitment to these organizations.

Throughout his life, A.L. found strength in his faith, his family, and his many friendships. His legacy is one of service, kindness, and generosity-a man who lived with integrity and an unwavering commitment to his country, his community, and those he loved.

A.L. was always the embodiment of a true gentleman-gentle, dignified, and compassionate in all his dealings. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
