Obituary

Arlie Ogle McGrady, 88, of Hillsville, Va, passed away on Friday, November 12. She was preceded in death by her parents Lula Ogle and James E Ogle; her husband, Arnold Allen McGrady; her son, David Arnold McGrady and her brother Haswell Ogle.

Born in Wythe County, November 17, 1921, she was a 1939 graduate of Hillsville High School and attended two years of Business College. Throughout her professional career, she remained a dedicated public servant to the citizens of Carroll County.

During World War Two, Mrs. McGrady worked for the County Draft Board. Her public service continued with work in the Sheriffs' Department and in the office of Clerk of the Court. Mrs. McGrady later worked for many years as Magistrate for the Commonwealth of Virginia, retiring in 1989 due to health problems.

She remained an active member of the Hillsville Christian Church, having joined the congregation in 1960. Using her administrative talents, she was head of the Christian Women's Fellowship, served as Treasurer, Deaconess and member of the Board for the Golden Harvest Thrift Shop.

A lifelong Republican, she was a member of the Republican Women of Carroll County. Her interest and respect for the law and politics continued throughout her life.

Surviving are her daughter, Phyllis E. McGrady and son-in-law Christopher Antoniacci, New York City, ; grandson, David Allen McGrady, Roanoke, Va; daughter-in-law, Sandy McGrady, Sparta, N.C.; sister-in-laws Mary Ogle, Woodlawn, Va, Thelma McGrady Gardner and Bessie McGrady, Strasburg,Va; numerous nieces and nephews with whom she was very close and made each one feel special.

Arlie remained curious about the world, reading the latest political novel while using the World Atlas and encyclopedia as a ready reference. She loved to travel, discuss politics and watch news programs.

Her beloved grandson remembers total love and support from his grandmother. They shared special picnics in the back yard and fun-filled road trips. Her step great grandchildren have memories of Grandma Arlie at the beach each summer helping them make homemade blueberry ice cream.

She lived her faith and faced her declining health with courage and grace. Her legacy is the love shared with her children, family, friends, and Hardscuffle neighbors. Many lives have been blessed by her wisdom.

The family thanks Dr Len Lastinger and his staff, the staff of Trinity Mission Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, The Woltz Hospice Home, her special neighbors, and a heartfelt thank you to the special women whose compassion and care allowed her to remain in the home she loved.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 17, 2010 at 11:00 AM at the Hillsville Christian Church with Dr. John Dunstan officiating. Burial will follow in the Gardner Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, November 16, 2010 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel is serving the family.
