Anna Mahala
Weeks Childress
February 15, 1923 – March 31, 2024
In loving memory of Anna Mahala Weeks Childress, who passed away at the impressive age of 101 on Easter Sunday, March 31, 2024. Born February 15,1923 to I.B. and Martha Weeks in Willis, VA, she led a fulfilling life surrounded by family and friends. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Paul Jamison Childress, an infant son, grandson, three beloved sisters, and other family members. We find comfort in knowing they are now reunited.
During her long life, she witnessed an incredible span of historical events – from the Great Depression to World War II, the space race, the digital age, and everything in between. Her life was a living timeline of the past century.
She and Paul married in 1943 and Anna embraced her role as a loving mother to their children, Allan Childress (Virginia) and Karen Childress Williams (Gray). She was a grandmother to six and a great-grandmother to seventeen children. She had a special way of making everyone feel cherished and valued.
Her talents were as diverse as the historical events she lived through. She was an excellent seamstress and mastered the art of hand quilting and designing handmade clothing. Her kitchen was a haven of delicious snacks and amazing meals. Every summer she stayed busy preserving all of her garden vegetables. To visit her basement was to be amazed by the hundreds of jars of green beans and tomatoes she canned every year. In the fall, it was a family tradition to make cases of applesauce. Anna was a member of the VFW Women's Auxiliary in Hillsville, VA. She loved to bake German chocolate cakes from scratch for their bake sales.
Her style made her truly one of a kind. Anna was always impeccably dressed, even for trips to the grocery store and post office. As we celebrate Anna's life, we find comfort in knowing that her legacy will live on through the generations she touched. She will remain forever in our hearts reminding us of the incredible strength, love, and joy that defined her remarkable life.
