Alta Clementine Horton Sumner , 89, of Woodlawn, passed away on Saturday, December 5, 2015 at Waddell Nursing and Rehab Center in Galax. Mrs. Sumner was born in Carroll County to the late Issac Brooks Horton and Laura Roseberry Horton. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Claude Monroe Sumner; daughter, Violet Josephine Sumner Wyatt; brothers, Raymond Horton, Clerin Horton, and Clyde Horton; and sisters, Gertrude Horton Goad, Irene Horton Brim, and Louise Horton Sawyers.

Survivors include her daughter, Linda Sumner Smythers and spouse, James (Butch) of Austinville; son, Carroll Monroe Sumner and spouse, Shirley Bowers Sumner of Galax, VA; son-in-law, Wade Wyatt of Newport News, VA; sisters, Ailene Shockley of Hillsville and Opalene Combs and spouse, Chester of Mt. Airy, NC; six grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, special friends and neighbors.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 10, 2015 at 2:00 PM at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel with Elder Ronald Bowman officiating. Burial will follow in the Henley Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 1:00 until 2:00 PM prior to the funeral service. Flowers will be appreciated or a donation may be made to Henley Cemetery 90 Happy Hollow Road Galax, VA 24333. Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel is serving the family.
