Obituary

Agnes Virginia Long, 99 of Hillsville, VA passed into her heavenly home on April 9, 2018 following a brief illness.  Agnes was born on November 8, 1918 in Pulaski, VA to the late Joseph and Effie Schrader.  She graduated from Pulaski High School and following various jobs in Pulaski, worked for many years as Employment Manager for Sprague Electric Company.  She married her husband of 57 years, Malcolm E. Long, in 1938 and lived in Pulaski and Portsmouth, VA before settling in Hillsville, VA.  She embodied the spirit of Christ and was an extraordinary encourager and optimist with a strength of will.  Agnes and Malcolm were founding and charter members of Trinity Baptist Church in Pulaski.  For 53 years Agnes was organist for First Baptist Church in Hillsville, Virginia where she and Malcolm were devoted members.  Agnes loved gardening and had a particular love for growing and arranging flowers with roses being her favorite.  She arranged flowers for the First Baptist Church sanctuary for many years.  She also enjoyed playing bridge and painting with oils.  Agnes was an active member of the Hillsville Woman's Club, the Hillsville Beautification Committee, the Plant and Pluck Garden Club, the Carter Pines Advisory Group and the Galax Gideon's Auxiliary.

In addition to her parents, Agnes was preceded in death by her husband, Malcolm E. Long; infant grandchildren, James C. Line and Martha E. Line; and sister, Frankie S. Pyle.  She is survived by her daughter, Martha E. Line (John); grandson, Dr. Eric Line; granddaughter, Kathy Sparks (Chris); great-grandchildren, Joseph Hale (Heather), Amy Kimsey (Laken), Sarah Sparks and Ben Sparks; great-great-granddaughter, Avery Hale; sister, Glenna S. Hinson; niece Sandra Jordan (Scott); and nephews, Eddie Pyle, Joseph Hinson (Margaret) and Michael Hinson (Anita).

The family will receive friends at 10:00 on Thursday April 12 at the First Baptist Church of Hillsville with the funeral following at the church at 11:00 and a graveside service afterwards at Wilkinson Memorial Cemetery. Dr. Lawrence Childs and Rev. Bill Black will officiate. V
