A. Oren Hurst, 94, of Hillsville passed away at his home on February 6, 2015. Oren was born on September 4, 1920 in Carroll County Virginia to Stella Jackson Hurst and Elmer Conway Hurst. He served our Country as a member of the United States Army during World War II. Oren served in both Europe and Japan and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. After returning from service, he married the love of his life, Doris Nell Ayers, and together, they raised four children - Carl, Scott, Eddy, and Kelly. Oren worked for the Virginia Department of Transportation for 41 years and retired as Superintendent of Maintenance for the Hillsville Residency (Carroll and Floyd Counties). He was a member of the Hillsville Presbyterian Church for 64 years. In retirement, Doris and he enjoyed traveling with friends across the United States. Oren had a passion for music, which he played professionally, photography and games of all kinds. Most importantly he loved and cherished his family. He is survived by his wife, children, nine grandchildren, and one great grandchild. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Presbyterian Children's Home of the Highlands. A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, February 10, 2015 at 2:00 PM at the Hillsville Presbyterian Church with Rev. Kevin Campbell officiating.
